A smart home is an intelligent environment where the systems (lights, sensors, heating and air-conditioning, doors, music, etc.) are interconnected to allow complex control strategies to save energy, improve comfort, safety and or convenience for the home inhabitants. An important area where such systems could make a difference, nowadays, is energy saving.
The purpose of this work is to design, develop and validate an Android-based mobile application for monitoring energy consumption in the home and proposing to inhabitants “greener” behavior.
The application will be based on the findings and the proposal reported in the paper “Home Energy Consumption Feedback: A User Survey”. The user interface (watch the sampling videos) should explore all the possibilities offered by touch-screen interaction, by remaining as simple and efficient as possible. The outcome of the work will be validated by means of a user study and, if satisfying, will be made available as an Open Source project.
